Dimensions For Living: Supporting Opportunities for the Autism Community

Dimensions For Living is a South West based charity co-founded by Barbara Wilson who has been an Ambassador for Autism for over 30 years.

Dimensions For Living aims to ensure that individuals on the Autistic Spectrum receive seamless support and respect from the cradle to the grave; All through the different dimensions of their life.

Why Dimensions For Living?

There are many facets to Autism and many different ways that Autism affects individuals. Each way is a different dimension of living.

We celebrate this multi-dimensional world all through the different dimensions of autistic life. Hence our name: Dimensions For Living.

The story of Dimensions For Living

A group of parents and friends of young adults with Autism formed Dimensions For Living in 1996. They were looking to create a powerful voice for children and young adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder and Aspergers Syndrome.

In its early days Dimensions For Living:

  • Acted as an influential advocate for people on the Autism Spectrum
  • Created the Saplings Leisure Project to help families with individuals on the Spectrum to enjoy relaxing together
  • Organised sports, music drama and art activities for the Autism Community
  • Aided in surgery work in North and East Devon to identify the number of individuals on the Autism Spectrum

More recently we have concentrated on:

  • Working 1:1 with Autistic individuals and their families
  • Helping individuals and families obtain the recognition and support that their condition needs
  • Advocating for the rights of those on the Autism Spectrum
  • Conducting support groups around Devon, for families and Autistic individuals

We are presently working with Devon County Council, Plymouth Council and Devon & Cornwall Police to introduce the Devon Autism Alert Card. This work has mainly been completed by individuals on the Autism Spectrum.

We intend to take out learnings and trainings from this experience and use it to increase our ability to support the Autism Community in the South West.
